Basic Skills / GED (General Education Development)
Since 1969, Journey House has had a vested interest in helping the residents of the Clarke Square community. One of the major ways in which this is done is through education and our Basic Skills/GED program is a major component of this initiative.
The Basic Skills/GED classes are offered in both English and Spanish and are open to community residents who are 18 years of age and older. Each student is asked to attend an orientation and testing session; there is a one time $5.00 charge for both of these sessions. Classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings. There is free, on-site childcare available mornings and evenings while the students are attending classes.
The Basic Skills/GED program prepares students to take the five GED tests in reading, social studies, science, writing and math. Students are evaluated using the TABE (Test for Adult Education) so teachers have an idea of the student’s abilities in reading, math and language. We offer the six levels of instruction designated by the state. These levels are specified by the National Reporting System. The areas of concentration are reading, writing and math.
Journey House is a delegate agency of MATC and all our students are eligible for an MATC ID, which gives them access to activities on the MATC campuses. Instruction is provided in group sessions. Approximately 200 students participate in this program each year; on average we have about 20 annual GED completions. All of our teachers are state certified.
