Math AcademyThe goal of the Math Academy is to ensure that its participants are on grade level with their math skills, that they are adequately prepared to move on to the next grade level, and are ready for secondary education and/or the workforce. Participants’ grade levels range from fourth grade through college level courses with these inner city youth ranging in age from ten to twenty-one. Students are divided into groups of ten with at least one participant performing on grade level or above. Students at the Youth Center are given homework help or work on Aleks, an online computer program that systematically assesses the user and works with the student at his/her own pace. At our Community Learning Centers, students struggling with math work on math homework or supplementary assignments to reinforce what is taught in the classroom. Each student has an individual schedule but, on average, receives help anywhere from a half hour to over two hours weekly. There is a mentor network in which all students are paired with working professionals that have math oriented careers. The Math Academy hours are Mondays through Fridays from 3:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
