Reading ScholarsBrand new in the fall of 2010, Journey House’s Reading Scholars program was designed to increase not only reading levels among its participants, but also reading interests. Initially, assignments based on reading level are made to help build interest, confidence and comprehension. Students are then encouraged to select their own assignments. Once an interest in reading has been established, participants are challenged to select material on subjects outside their areas of interest. The ultimate goal is to create a change in the students’ feelings about reading so that they are encouraged to read on their own. Reading Scholars is about improving more than just test scores, but ideas regarding books and reading all together.
