Basic Skills/GED
Education is a core principal of Journey House. Our Basic Skills/GED program provides top-of-the-line educational resources to anyone who wishes to take advantage of them. All of our instructors are certified by Milwaukee Area Technical College, and the same resources available at any MATC campus are available to students at Journey House when they log in to our computers.
Journey House offers Basic Skills/GED classes in both Spanish and English. Students are evaluated using the TABE (Test for Adult Basic Education) so teachers can tailor lessons to each student’s abilities in reading, math and language. Stu dents prepare for the computerized GED test in Reading through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies. We follow state guidelines and offer six levels of instruction specified by the National Reporting System (NRS).

Classes are open to community residents age 18 years and older. Each student is required to attend an orientation and testing session; there is a one-time $10.00 materials fee for both of these sessions. Classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings. There is free, on-site childcare available for children who are walking to 6 years while parents/guardians attend class.
English Language Learners (ELL)
Learning a language requires constant exposure and a desire to improve. Journey House exposes adult participants to the English language through our English Language Learners (ELL) program. ELL pairs ambitious students with experienced and motivated educators. The curriculum stresses competencies in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students' progress is measured according to the National Reporting System (NRS), which has six levels of competencies, learning objectives, and performance standards.
Learning English opens many doors for our adult students. It increases job opportunities, helps participants connect better with their neighbors and other members of the community, and provides participants with a better future overall. Our instructors are certified by the State of Wisconsin or Wisconsin Technical College System.
Approximately 300 students are served each year. Classes are open to community residents age 18 years and older. Orientations and placement tests for new students are held in September, January, and June; there is a one-time fee of $10.00 for registration and testing. Classes are offered mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Free, on-site childcare is available for children who are walking to 6 years while parents/guardians attend class. |
Citizenship
Journey House applauds the individuals who desire to become recognized as naturalized citizens of the United States. Each year, hundreds of thousands of individuals from all around the world complete and pass the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Naturalization Test. Thanks to an anonymous donor, Journey House supports 25 men and women from our community who go through this process every year.
Due to high demand, the waiting list to enter into this program at Journey House is very long - approximately two years. Individuals who wish to be placed on the waiting list can contact Journey House at 414-647-0548 and inquire about Citizenship Classes.
