Journey House Youth Athletics
The Vision
The Vision of all Journey House Youth Athletics programs is to produce a high quality, highly-organized, good-looking program by providing a first class experience for our youth, parents, coaches, and community. We strive to be a world class urban youth sports program with an emphasis on education, character and life skills, nutrition, appearance, parent engagement, and competitive success.
We will practice the ideas of health, citizenship, and character; bring our youth closer together through a common interest in fair play and sportsmanship; embrace the game elements of safety, sanity, and intelligent supervision; and keep the welfare of the participants first, foremost, and entirely free of adult pursuit for glory.

Born in Isabela, Puerto Rico on July 29, 1934, Mantilla enjoyed a 24-year professional baseball career that started at the age of 12 in his home country. When he began playing for pay in a Police Athletic League in 1946, Mantilla earned $2 to $5 per game. This sum, while small by today's baseball salaries, significantly contributed to raising the standard of living for the Mantilla family.
Felix "El Gato" Mantilla enjoyed an illustrious professional baseball career that included two World Series appearances and a 1965 MLB All-Star selection. Mantilla appeared in over 400 games for the Milwaukee Braves from 1956 to 1961.
|
Mantilla played six additional seasons in the Majors, spending three years with the Boston Red Sox and one year each with the New York Mets, Houston Astros, and Chicago Cubs. His individual contributions to his teams' successes were recognized in 1965, when Mantilla was named to the American League All-Star Team as a member of the Red Sox. Over his entire Major League career, Mantilla played in 969 games, compiling 707 hits (.261 batting average), 89 home runs, 330 runs-batted-in, and 27 stolen bases. He has been named to the New York Mets 1960's All-Decade Team and enshrined in the Puerto Rico Sports Hall of Fame, the Isabela Puerto Rico Hall of Fame, the Wisconsin Old Time Baseball Players Hall of Fame, and the Milwaukee Braves Wall of Honor at Miller Park.
It did not take long for Mantilla to climb the baseball ranks. He helped Puerto Rico win the 1951 Amateur World Series and the 1954 Caribbean League World Series before ascending to the Major Leagues, where he spent his first six seasons in Milwaukee as a versatile utility player for the Milwaukee Braves. Mantilla reached the pinnacle of the baseball world when he helped the Braves beat the New York Yankees to win the 1957 World Series.
|
Mantilla's accomplishments become even more impressive when viewed through the lens of the era during which he played. His career came on the heels of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier and making it possible for non-whites to play in the Major Leagues. In addition to regularly facing hostile and racist fans, Mantilla accepted and overcame the additional challenge of playing baseball in a country where he did not speak the language. Thanks to trailblazers like Mantilla, today over 1 in every 4 Major League Baseball players come from Latin American countries.
